Where can I buy?
Within selected Debenhams stores, Helen E Experience make-up parties, Wetherells of Selby, independent salons, spas and Chemists, on line and at major fashion and Beauty events throughout the UK including Clothes Show Live NEC Birmingham.

Review:

Helen-E Cosmetics is run by former beauty queen turned entrepreneur, Helen Elowe.

Although it's a small company, Helen-E Cosmetics gets the kind of publicity and glamorous image that the major brands would die for because it's the official make-up sponsor for Miss England.

Helen-E Cosmetics is also prominent at the Clothes Show Live, the 10 Years Younger Show and the National Wedding Show, in addition to being regularly featured in the glossy magazines and national newspapers.

Helen-E Cosmetics started in 2002, and launched its network marketing arm in 2008. If you joined Helen-E's network marketing plan as a consultant, then the high profile which comes from publicity like this would be invaluable to you in building your business.

The basis of the Helen-E network marketing scheme is party plan.

The key to successful party plan is to hold regular parties and to encourage people attending your parties to go on to host their own parties.

With Helen E, you should have no shortage of people wanting to host parties because, as well as the glamorous image, it raises the kind of curiosity which is essential to get people up and out of their TV armchairs and off to a presentation. They are curious to see the free makeover for every guest: what will they look like with the new make-up on, and what what will their friends look like?

And of course, women wouldn't like to think that they are losing out on a way of improving their appearance which their friends are benefiting from.

Helen-E parties are fun and lively, as well as being profitable for the hostess, who receives free Helen-E products valued at between £30 and £90, depending on the level of sales made at the party. So, party guests are likely to be keen to hold their own parties.

That's what makes party plan successful - continually keeping the sparks of activity going with each party sparking off more parties.

Party plan is a social way of earning money which would be particularly attractive to young mothers who miss the contact with a lot of different people which they had whilst working, and who can organise their business to fit around their domestic commitments.

And Helen-E Cosmetics is a good opportunity for the recession because it has reasonably-priced products (many of which cost under £20) and they are consumables, so you can expect repeat orders.

Also, it wouldn't be difficult for you to recruit people to join your team because a lot more people are now looking for ways to earn extra money.

More importantly, though, there is what is known as "the Lipstick Effect".

The lipstick effect is the theory that when times are hard consumers stop buying expensive items like new cars and holidays, but they are more willing to buy small luxuries. This term was coined by Leonard Lauder, Chairman of Estee Lauder, when he saw the huge jump in lipstick sales after the 9/11 attacks on the USA.

In the global economy, consumers have been increasing their spending on cosmetics even while economising on everything else.

This tendency can be traced back to the Great Depression of the 1930s in the USA. In the four years from 1929 to 1933, industrial production in the US halved, but sales of cosmetics rose.

In Germany, the unemployment total rose to 6 million, but those working for Beiersdorf (which has owned and developed Nivea, the biggest skin care brand world-wide, since 1911) did not suffer. The company did not lay off a single employee.

Therefore, it's a wise choice to join a cosmetics company in a recession.

Helen-E pays a basic commission of 25% on all sales. And if you achieve sales of £1,200 in a month, then this commission percentage is raised to 30%.

Helen-E says that you can earn between £40 to £100 per party. They say that sales of £1,200 equates to about 6 parties, so typical sales per party are £200. That means that you'd be making £50 per party if you held less than 7 a month, or £60 a party if you held 7 parties or more a month.

Because Helen-E Cosmetics has a multi-level marketing structure, there is an enhanced earnings potential as you can earn commission not only on the products that you sell yourself, but also on the products sold by members of your team when you recruit people.

If you build a team, then you earn a further 3% in commission not only on your own sales but also on the sales of people in your team.

Helen-E Cosmetics only costs £49 to start, for which you receive a makeover kit with a Recommended Retail Price of £250.

In return for this, you need to agree to personally sell £500 of Helen-E cosmetics in your first two full calendar months.

The only other thing you need to have is public liability insurance, which costs you £26.50 a year for cover of £2 million.

Helen-E Cosmetics is a totally flexible business which you can operate as you wish. Regular training sessions are held, but attendance is not compulsory and you receive training on how to hold parties and how to do makeovers via online training sessions.

Let's look now at what's needed to succeed with any party plan. A fundamental requirement is that it's vital that you share the company's values and you are passionate about the products. So if you share Helen Elowe's enthusiasm about building confidence (both in yourself and in the people you meet) and you love cosmetics and rate her products highly, this could be the ideal part-time opportunity for you.

To earn money with any party plan opportunity, you clearly need to enjoy meeting people, and you also need to be well-organised and to have patience and persistence. Sustained effort with the business is required, and you should be prepared to put in three months of hard work before you start to see real rewards. Party plan is like a ripple effect: you need to hold at least one party a week to keep the ripples going so that your business keeps moving forward.

Your belief in the products is a must, because your enthusiasm will be infectious and will be crucial to building your team.

Like most party plan companies, Helen-E has its own specific format for running parties. This makes it easier for beginners, because you just follow the laid-down format.

With most business opportunities, you can't find out what they're really like until you've paid to join them, which obviously involves a risk. Party plan, however, has the enormous advantage that you can sample it before you join by attending at least one party.

So, if you think you might be interested in joining Helen-E Cosmetics, then the best approach would be to attend a party and then hold a party of your own as a hostess. Make sure that you invite some friends who can be relied upon to give an honest opinion. That way, you would have first hand knowledge of what it entails to hold parties, and - more importantly - first hand knowledge of how interested the guests were in buying the products.

Essentially, to host a party all you have to do is to provide the venue and the guests, and you will receive some free cosmetics for your trouble.

However, I've come across a potential drawback with Helen-E which I've written to the company about to invite their response, as follows:

The Helen-E Cosmetics opportunity has a number of strong advantages for people thinking of joining as a consultant - such as its very good media exposure which helps consultants to build up their businesses; the fact that cosmetics traditionally sell well in a recession; and the fact that they are consumable, which is important for repeat orders, and they are reasonably-priced.

However, I've come across a problem that could mean that I can't rate Helen-E Cosmetics as high as I'd like to.

The problem is that the company seems to be in competition with its own consultants through the company website (and also a storefront on Amazon) because it's selling the same items. Is this right?

Also, it seems that consultants aren't allowed to have their own websites.

It's normally an essential feature of a party plan operation that the products sold are uniquely available via the consultants. This is important for boosting party plan sales because the products then have a genuine exclusivity which increases their value in the eyes of purchasers.

Not only that, but could there also be a danger that the company is creaming off some sales from its consultants because customers who have been introduced to Helen-E products by a consultant can then bypass the consultant by placing further orders online at helen-e.com?

It's human nature that customers will tend to buy from the source that's easiest for them, and there seems to be a very low order level of £10 for free delivery on the company website, so this could be a real problem.

It seems to me that the competition from the sales in some Debenham stores, independent salons, chemists and beauty events is not nearly so important for consultants as competition from the company's own website (and Amazon), because customers would have to go out to get the products from other locations, whereas it's the immediate convenience of ordering online that could be a potential major problem.

Some companies are very good about this and they effectively remove themselves from competition by not taking orders on the company site and instead directing site visitors towards their local consultant.

For the company, party planning is a great way of bringing in new customers at low cost. But unless there's a structure to ensure that further purchases by these customers are credited to party planners for commission purposes, then it's not so easy for party planners to build up a business in the longer term.

Of course, perhaps your company already largely avoids this problem by inputting to the databank on the company website the names and addresses of customers obtained by consultants, so that your company website recognises customers belonging to consultants and credits them with commissions on website orders.

The way I see it is that it's in a company's interests to reward their consultants fully for sales from their customers, because increasing consultants' revenue helps to encourage them and retain their loyalty, which not only brings in more sales but also provides a more stable and steadily growing workforce of consultants.

Although you addressed your letter to Helen she passed it to myself as I set up The Helen E Experience. This is our direct selling side to the business and I'm more than happy to answer your questions.

Helen E website in direct competition with consultants?

My consultants sell from an exclusive party plan catalogue:

So when a customer purchases from a consultant they get fantastic offers sometimes saving over 50% on individual web prices.

Our original web/mail order customers also receive a flyer in every order inviting them to book a party for exclusive deals thus enhancing the direct selling business. This also happens with all sales from Debenhams or at exhibitions.

We also invite any consultants to come along free of charge to these big events to speak to customers and gain new business.

Linking customers to consultants

When consultants place party orders they input the customers email address, this links the customer to the consultant.

We train consultants to build a good customer relationship and re-order business. However, should the customer then place an order direct on the web, the consultant will earn 15% from the order placed direct with head office.

Why would a customer choose to shop with a consultant rather than direct web/Amazon?

1) Exclusive deal prices.
2) We have an offer called CLUB15. Should a customer choose to shop online they can use the consultants CLUB15 code. This will give them 15% off web prices (plus 15% commission to the consultant)

Consultants own websites?

Yes, this is due to go live this May and will be FREE to consultants. Customers will be able to shop on each consultants own site.

I truly believe I have the best opportunity available for people seeking a new business venture. A good income, low expenses and lovely products. When a consultant joins Helen E they can stay for life -we do not throw them off the system for being inactive. With CLUB15 they can always get discount on make-up!

Lisa Rooney's email removes my concerns about the company's website competing with consultants' businesses.

Overall, I rate the Helen E Cosmetics opportunity very highly at 9 out of 10.

Attend a couple of parties before you decide whether to join. Then, if you're really enthusiastic about the products and you've seen that other guests are, too, and you're prepared to put in consistent effort to find a hostess for at least one party per week - then join the company.
